Gemma is spending some quality time with Vincent van Goght after an amazing run of Goldiloxin’ (at Bowdoin, Endicott, Boston College, Boston University, and Yale) that earned her TWO bingos. She’s going for the blackout (and some sweet swag) next!

EARLY COLLEGE REGISTRATION OPENS FRIDAY 11//3
If you are planning to take an Early College course next semester, get ready!
Be sure to create an account in the portal and put a reminder in your calendar to sign up. Some classes (ASL for one) fill up really quickly, so apply early and often (you didn’t hear this from me, but you can request more than one section of a course that you really want to get into; the nice EC folks will write back and tell you that you can only do one, but meanwhile multiple requests increase your chances of getting what you want).
The college calendar is very different from the CHILLS calendar, so make sure that you’re going to be able to complete the classes you request amidst your other commitments.
ANOTHER SHAMELESS PLUG FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING AT UROCK
Monday night from 4-6:45PM at URock in Rockland (4th floor of the Jensen’s Pharmacy building) starting Monday, January 22. Many of the UMaine Pathways include Public Speaking as an elective that counts toward the Pathway. You are allowed to import one class from outside of UMaine; Public Speaking at URock is a UMaine Augusta class, but it will count toward your Pathway provided that it’s your only one.
Free Community College Getting National Attention… Again!
One of Tuesday morning’s most popular stories on Inside Higher Ed was yet another article exploring the unparalleled success of the MCCS Free Community College initiative. (if you create a free account, you will be able to read the article. I highly recommend that you make an account, as IHE will be a frequent reference point in the Courier)
WORD TO THE WISE if you are planning to apply to a community college, don’t wait. Get it done. All you need to do is complete the application on the school’s website and then request that we send a transcript. Easy peasy.
Why now? Every CC except NMCC is experiencing a jump in enrollment. ON CAMPUS HOUSING is becoming a huge issue. If you are accepted and commit to attend, then you will be able to request housing early in the process rather than late–you just might get a room.
If you play it the traditional way and don’t get around to it in May or June, there isn’t going to be anything left. At one point last year SMCC had over 1,000 students on the housing waiting list. Get it done so you can secure your housing.
Here’s an infographic that conveys a great deal of information about the Free CC program:

The Top U.S. Colleges With the Greatest Economic Diversity
The data show that over the past decade, some of these selective colleges, especially those with large endowments, have enrolled more students who are economically disadvantaged; at the same time, however, most schools have seen their number of these students decrease. Studying these numbers is particularly important in the wake of two important developments this year in higher education: the Supreme Court’s decision to do away with race-based affirmative action and the decision by some schools to abandon or reduce legacy admissions. Each put a new renewed focus on institutional efforts to consider wealth in making admissions decisions. This list shows us how schools are doing.
Gen “P” Goes to College
This fall’s applicant cohort will be the first to have entered high school during the pandemic. Assessing their college readiness will be a challenge for admissions offices. IHE article
