MCST NEXT YEAR?
“To continue to broaden the demographic and socioeconomic diversity of its student body, Colby College announced today that it has received an extraordinary new gift of $50 million for financial aid.
The new commitment from the Lunder Foundation will support Colby’s ongoing efforts to enroll and graduate talented students from all backgrounds. The impact of this transformational gift, which is one of the largest in the College’s history, will be felt for generations, and over time thousands of students and their families will benefit from it. It also will ensure that Colby’s financial aid program remains one of the most generous programs in the country.”
6 things teens say they really need for their mental health
It's not often that the world gets to hear from teens about what boosts their mental health.
A new report from Crisis Text Line and Common Good Labs aims to provide exactly that insight at a time when people, including lawmakers, are scrambling for solutions to the youth mental health crisis.

In this joyous collection of essays about historically Black colleges and universities, alumni both famous and up-and-coming write testimonials about the schools and experiences that shaped their lives and made them who they are today.
With a distinguished and diverse set of contributors, including Oprah Winfrey, Stacey Abrams, and Branford Marsalis, HBCU Made is the only book of its kind, illuminating and celebrating the experience of going to a historically Black college or university—for proud alumni, their loved ones, current students, and anyone considering an HBCU.
In moving and candid essays about the schools that nurtured and educated them, a wide range of famous alums share their accounts of how they chose their HBCU, their first days on campus, the dynamic atmosphere of classes where students were constantly challenged to do their best, the professors who devoted themselves to the students, the marching bands and majorettes and how they were shaped by their rigorous training.
For some contributors, the choice to attend an HBCU was an easy one as they followed in the footsteps of their parents or siblings. For others, it was a carefully considered step away from a predominantly white institution to be educated in a place where they would never have to justify their presence. And for all, it was an HBCU that took them in and cared for them like family, often helping them to overcome a rough patch.
A collection that brims with insight and school spirit, HBCU Made is a perfect gift for each generation of prospective students and graduates to come.
Got Webcam?
Live webcams are becoming a “thing” on college campuses; we are running into them with increasing regularity.
It’s a fun way to check in on a school that you’re interested in just to see what’s going on.
More than one tour guide has indicated that their family has integrated it into their staying connected activities. Something along the lines of “Stand in the quad and wave to the camera at 2:00.”
Here are some that we’re aware of:

Making the Most Of Spring Break
“I know it’s just the beginning of February, but this is a great time for families to huddle together and start planning which colleges they’d like to visit over spring break. I tell families that Spring break is the best time to visit if a school is in session — it’s important to check to see if your high school calendar overlaps with college calendars. Assuming colleges are in session, visiting a humming campus in springtime is a great way for students to determine if they feel a connection to the school. If families have already made other plans for spring break, it’s fine to make the visits over the summer, but oftentimes you’ll see more 10-year-olds in soccer uniforms than college students.
These visits can play a crucial role in the decision-making process, allowing prospective students to get a feel for the campus atmosphere, academic environment, and overall college experience. Let’s explore how families can make the most of their campus visits over spring break. Read on…

This year – 2024 – is the year you become a senior. This is the year you’ll hear one question over and over and over again…what are your plans after you graduate?
Maybe you’ve already started brainstorming and making post-high school plans, or maybe you’re just beginning the thought process. Regardless of that, we’re sharing our top three tips for college searching. Read on for tip #1, with #2 and #3 to follow in the coming weeks.”
